“Great Before the Lord”
Blessings folk!
The Angel continues to speak to Zechariah.
He had told him that prayers had been heard.
He would have a son to be named John.
Then the Angel says…
Luke 1:14-15
And you will have joy and gladness,
and many will rejoice at his birth,
for he will be great before the Lord.
And he must not drink wine or strong drink,
and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit,
even from his mother’s womb.
ESV
The Angel states that Zechariah and Elizabeth will have joy and gladness at the birth of John.
Many will rejoice at his brith.
Why?
Because John will be great before the Lord.
The Angel tells Zechariah that John must not drink wine nor strong drink.
Why?
There seems to be echos of a “Nazarite vow” that we find in the Old Testament.
A setting apart before the Lord, especially for a particular purpose for a particular time. (Numbers 6, Judges 13)
Then, this interesting statement.
John would be filled with the Holy Spirit “even from his mother’s womb”.
What does that mean?
We will see.
Zechariah and Elizabeth had prayed for children.
After it seems that children are not longer possible, comes this word.
With God, all things are possible.
With God, nothing is impossible.
Forget not.
