“Favored One!”
Blessings folk!
Gabriel, the angel sent from the Lord, appears to Mary.
Listen to what he says.
Listen to Mary’s response.
Luk 1:28-29
And he came to her and said,
“Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”
But she was greatly troubled at the saying,
and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.
ESV
What did Gabriel look like?
Apparently he was in “normal” human form.
None of the incorrect “angel with wings” stuff.
Mary does not appear to be troubled nor disturbed by his appearance.
We do not see her falling down in fear as often happens in the Scripture when angels appear.
Yet, she was troubled.
She was perplexed as the Lexham and NASB translate.
Perplexed about what?
Why did Gabriel call her “favored one”.
“Favored” in who’s eyes.
“Favored” in what way.
Then, “the Lord is with you”.
Mary knew that the Lord was with His people, but this was different.
What was meant?
Mary sought to discern the meaning.
She ponders it as the Lexham states.
I love what the KJV says… “she cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be”.
Just the greeting set Mary to thinking.
Good.
It prepared her for what was to be said next…
