“A Decree”
Blessings folk!
We press on with the birth narrative of the Lord Jesus.
Luke 2:1-5
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
And all went to be registered, each to his own town.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee,
from the town of Nazareth,
to Judea,
to the city of David,
which is called Bethlehem,
because he was of the house and lineage of David,
to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
ESV
“In those days”.
What days?
What we had just read about with Zechariah/Elizabeth/John.
Do not miss these timing markers in the Word.
What happened?
A decree from the top.
All the “world”…the Roman Empire…was to register.
The details are precise.
This was the first registration, when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
There were other registrations later.
Joseph went.
From Galilee.
From Nazareth in Galilee.
To Judea.
To the city of David called Bethlehem.
Why?
Because he was of the house of Bethlehem.
Because he was of the lineage of David.
He went to register.
He went with Mary, his betrothed wife.
She was bearing The Child.
Inconvenient?
Yes.
Uncomfortable?
No doubt.
Yet, they went forth.
