“Know for Certain"
Blessings folk!
Joshua continues to speak to the people.
He encourages.
He exhorts.
He warns.
We saw yesterday that he told them to be very careful.
He explains more…
Jos 23:11-13
Be very careful, therefore, to love the LORD your God.
For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you,
know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you,
but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes,
until you perish from off this good ground that the LORD your God has given you.
ESV
They were to be very careful to love the Lord God.
How?
By doing what He commanded.
By obeying.
Joshua gives a primary example.
If they married from the remnant of nations remaining among them…
If they turn back to them…
If they cling to them…
If they associate with them…and vice versa…
Then they are told forthrightly that the Lord would no longer drive out the nations before them.
The nations would become a snare…
The nations would become a trap…
The nations would be a whip at the side of Israel…
The nations would be a thorn in the eyes of Israel…
It would be this way until the people of the Lord perished from the good ground given.
Does this mean until they experience physical, personal death?
Perhaps.
Does this mean that Israel as a people would be driven from the Land?
Perhaps.
Both happened.
Be very careful…
