“You Have Agreed…”
Blessings folk!
Neb had told the wise guys…
How would they respond?
Dan 2:7-9
They answered a second time and said,
“Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show its interpretation.”
The king answered and said,
“I know with certainty that you are trying to gain time,
because you see that the word from me is firm—
if you do not make the dream known to me, there is but one sentence for you.
You have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till the times change.
Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me its interpretation.”
ESV
The Chaldeans pressed in again.
“Let the king tell his servants the dream…then we will interpret.”
Neb gets to the bottom-line.
He did not trust them.
With these dreams…
With this matter…
He must have the truth.
He knew they would say what would benefit them.
He knew they would create…lie.
He states it forthrightly.
If they did not make the dream known to him, then there is only one conclusion…they had agreed to speaking lying/corrupt words to him.
Neb told them, if they could tell the dream, then he would know the interpretation was correct.
What is meant by the phrase “till the times change”?
I do not know with certainty.
It is said in the context of “trying to gain time”.
I’m inclined to think it means that they were stalling for time to keep the king happy until the dream talk passed by…don’t rock the ship…just ride it out.
The king will eventually move on.
No, not in this case…
