“Branch”

Blessings folk!

We saw in the last verse of John 14 that Jesus had said “rise, let us go from here.”

They had been gathered around a meal.

Their last meal together “this side of glory”.

We assume they arose and left.

Where were they headed?

We will see later.

For now, note what John writes that Jesus did next.

John 15:1-2

“I am the true vine,

and my Father is the vinedresser.

Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away,

and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes,

that it may bear more fruit.

ESV

Jesus suddenly begins to speak of vines?

Why?

We are not told.

But, I have a thought.

I think that Jesus and His disciples were walking past a vineyard.

We see this in the gospels in several places.

Jesus would use what they were seeing/experiencing as an example for a point.

Jesus wanted them to understand.

He, Jesus, is the true vine.

Father is the vinedresser.

But, then this.

“Every branch in me (Jesus) that does not bear fruit he (Father) takes away.”

“Every brand that does bear fruit he (Father) prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”

What is meant?

What/who is a “branch”?

There are “branches in me” that do not bear fruit.

They are taken away by Father.

There are “branches in me” that bear fruit.

They are pruned.

They bear more.
